About Us
History
Our story started 39 years ago.
- 1985 - LOFP had its beginnings
- 1987 - A six kilometer Hunger Walk was held to raise funds. 148 people participated and $675 was collected.
- 1987 - Volunteer staff handled between 2000 and 4000 pounds of food each month
- 1988 - LOFP moved to new location at 252 Blue Ridge drive from the previous location in the "old Library' at 110 Caroline street
-
1992 - first van was donated by Virginia power
2019 - With the advent of COVID 19, person to person was eliminated. Volunteers placed large banana boxes of food directly into the trunks of cars. - 2022 - Client choice returned to LOFP
LOFP is in its 39th year of providing food for its neighbors. In 1985, Rev. Bruce Johnson of the Pentecostal Holiness Church at 225 Spicer’s Mill Road in Orange knew of 50 elderly church members and neighbors who needed food. The Thomas Jefferson Area Food Bank (now the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank) had recently opened a location in Ruckersville. Rev. Johnson went there to buy food at greatly reduced prices and so the Love Outreach Food Pantry began its service to the hungry. The food was stored in the church closet. 38 years later, the food pantry and clothes closet have a long and proud history of serving their neighbors.
